A game with a local accent
Long nardy begins with all fifteen checkers stacked at the head. Both armies travel in the same direction, never hit, and compete to build and escape blocking structures. The absence of hitting does not make the game passive: a six-point wall can decide the race, and moving too many checkers from the head can destroy the timing needed to cross it.
Physical play is common in courtyards, parks, family rooms, clubs, and cafés. Sessions are social but serious, often played as repeated cubeless games. The exact stake or series score belongs to local agreement; the geometry of the block is the shared language.
What happens at the table
Long nardy first
For many players, длинные нарды is the default. Standard hit-and-enter backgammon is specifically short nardy.
No hitting
Checkers cannot be sent to the bar. Tempo, access to open points, and the shape of a six-point block replace attack-and-reentry tactics.
Head discipline
Opening checkers leave a single starting stack under special rules. Choosing when to release them is a defining skill.
Cubeless series
Traditional games usually score the board result rather than cube decisions. Tournament backgammon adds a separate match-play layer.
Long nardy and short nardy
Long nardy is a same-direction race with no contact hits. Blocking is powerful but subject to legal-move constraints that prevent permanently sealing an opposing army before it has advanced. Short nardy uses the familiar opposing directions, blots, hits, bar entry, and standard backgammon tactics.
A player moving between the two must reset several instincts. In long nardy, leaving a single checker exposed is not a blot; in short nardy, the same shape may be an immediate tactical liability. Boardgammon labels the profile clearly so muscle memory never has to guess which law applies.
Words heard around the board
| At the table | What it means |
|---|---|
| нарды · nardy | The family name for backgammon-type table games. |
| длинные нарды | Long nardy: the same-direction, no-hitting blocking race. |
| короткие нарды | Short nardy: standard-style backgammon with hitting and bar entry. |
| голова · head | The starting stack from which the checkers enter play. |
How Boardgammon handles the tradition
Boardgammon includes a dedicated long-nardy local profile rather than approximating it with standard movement. Legal moves, head releases, direction, blocking, and evaluation geometry are variant-aware. Russian lesson text is available across the Learn catalog.
Online matchmaking currently stays on one standard-backgammon lane so a growing player community meets quickly instead of being split across empty queues. Regional formats remain available for local play and learning; additional online lanes open when player volume can support them.
