Sicilian Defence: the c-pawn trade and the c-file
The Sicilian Defence (1.e4 c5) for Black, on real positions: trade the c-pawn for White’s d-pawn, then put a rook on the half-open c-file and aim it at c3.
The moves: 1.e4 c5
The lessons
Trade the c-pawn for the d-pawn
When White plays d4, Black takes with the c-pawn: a wing pawn for a centre pawn and a half-open c-file. White gets space and speed. Never let White have d4 for free.
The rook belongs on c8
After …cxd4 the c-file is half-open. A rook on c8 aims at c3 and c2, and …Nxd4 followed by …Bc6 turns the file into pressure on e4 too.
