Backgammon glossary · P

Pay now or pay later

The recurring choice to accept a small risk now to avoid a bigger one later. Often the right play.

How it works in play

Many positions offer a choice between leaving a blot now, while the opponent has few ways to hit it and less to gain, and staying safe but risking a worse shot later. Paying now is often right, especially while the opponent’s home board is still weak.

  • Blot — A point occupied by exactly one checker — vulnerable to being hit.
  • Shot — A roll that hits an opponent’s blot.
  • Timing — In holding and back games: how long you can wait before being forced to break a key point.
