Pip

One unit of distance on the board — one point of travel.

How it works in play

A pip is one point of movement: a 5 moves a checker five pips. Add up the pips all your checkers still have to travel and you have your pip count, the measure of the race.

  • Pip count — The total pips all your checkers still need to travel to bear off. Both sides start at 167.
  • Race — A position with no remaining contact between the two sides.
  • Roll — The two dice numbers thrown on a turn.
