The seven checkers variants

Same shaped pieces, seven different games. Every profile below is implemented move-for-move in Boardgammon's engine — these tables describe exactly what the game will and won't let you play, not approximate folklore.

One table, seven rulebooks

Variant Board · men Men capture backward Kings Capture choice Crowning mid-jump
English draughts 8×8 · 12 No One step Free choice Crowns, move ends
International draughts 10×10 · 20 Yes Flying Longest forced No crowning in passing
Brazilian draughts 8×8 · 12 Yes Flying Longest forced No crowning in passing
Russian draughts 8×8 · 12 Yes Flying Free choice Crowns and keeps capturing
Pool checkers 8×8 · 12 Yes Flying Free choice Crowns, move ends
German draughts 8×8 · 12 No Flying Free choice Crowns, move ends
Turkish dama 8×8 · 16 (orthogonal) No (sideways yes) Flying (rook-like) Longest forced Crowns, move ends

Capture is mandatory in every variant. “Longest forced” is the majority rule: you must play the line that captures the most pieces. First move is White everywhere except English draughts, where the darker color starts.
