Indirect shot

A shot that needs both dice combined to hit (a blot 7–12 pips away).

How it works in play

A blot 7 to 12 pips away can only be hit with both dice together, so far fewer rolls do it: 6 of the 36 at seven pips, and only 2 at eleven. Leaving a blot out of direct range is often the safest play available.

  • Shot — A roll that hits an opponent’s blot.
  • Blot — A point occupied by exactly one checker — vulnerable to being hit.
  • Hit — Land on an opponent’s blot, sending it to the bar.
  • Duplication — Arranging your position so the opponent needs the same number for two different jobs — fewer rolls help them.
