Backgammon glossary · H

Hit

Land on an opponent’s blot, sending it to the bar.

How it works in play

Landing on a single opposing checker sends it to the bar: it loses every pip it had travelled and has to re-enter. A hit also costs the opponent their next turn if they then fail to enter, which is the idea behind every blitz.

  • Blot — A point occupied by exactly one checker — vulnerable to being hit.
  • Bar — The center ridge of the board; where hit checkers go.
  • Entering — Moving a checker from the bar into the opponent’s home board.
  • Shot — A roll that hits an opponent’s blot.
  • Blitz — Aggressive attacking strategy aiming to close the opponent out on the bar.
