Duplication

Arranging your position so the opponent needs the same number for two different jobs — fewer rolls help them.

How it works in play

Duplication is defensive arithmetic. If the 4s that would hit your blot are also the 4s the opponent needs to make a key point, one roll can’t do both jobs, so fewer rolls hurt you. Strong players leave their blots where the opponent’s good numbers overlap.

  • Diversification — Spreading your good numbers so that many different rolls do useful work.
  • Shot — A roll that hits an opponent’s blot.
  • Blot — A point occupied by exactly one checker — vulnerable to being hit.
  • Indirect shot — A shot that needs both dice combined to hit (a blot 7–12 pips away).
