X-22

Paul Magriel’s famous nickname, taken from his numbered self-play training games.

How it works in play

Paul Magriel wrote Backgammon, the book that taught a generation the modern game, won the world championship in 1978 and wrote a backgammon column for The New York Times.

  • Prime — Consecutive made points (a 4-prime, 5-prime, or the impassable 6-prime).
  • Timing — In holding and back games: how long you can wait before being forced to break a key point.
  • Duplication — Arranging your position so the opponent needs the same number for two different jobs — fewer rolls help them.
