Backgammon glossary · Z

Zone

The region of the board where contact between the two sides remains possible.

How it works in play

Once your checkers have passed every opposing checker, they can no longer block or hit anything: they have left the zone, and from then on they count only in the race.

  • Contact — A position where opposing checkers can still hit each other.
  • Race — A position with no remaining contact between the two sides.
  • Prime — Consecutive made points (a 4-prime, 5-prime, or the impassable 6-prime).
  • Holding game — Strategy of holding an anchor in the opponent’s territory (typically the 20-point) and waiting for a shot.
