Golden point

The 5-point (offense) — or the 20-point as the defensive "golden anchor."

How it works in play

Your 5-point is the best point to own in the opening: it blocks the opponent’s back checkers and anchors any prime or closeout you build. Its mirror, the opponent’s 5-point (your 20-point), is the best anchor. That is why 3-1 makes the 5-point at once.

  • Anchor — A point made (2+ checkers) in the opponent’s home board. Defensive.
  • Advanced anchor — An anchor on the 20-point (the "golden anchor") or the 18-point.
  • Prime — Consecutive made points (a 4-prime, 5-prime, or the impassable 6-prime).
  • Bar point — The 7-point. After the 5-point, the second-most-valuable offensive point.
  • Slot — Deliberately leave a blot on a key point, intending to cover it next turn.
