Holding game

Strategy of holding an anchor in the opponent’s territory (typically the 20-point) and waiting for a shot.

How it works in play

In a holding game you are behind in the race but hold an anchor in the opponent’s board, usually on the 20- or 18-point, and wait: as they bring their last checkers home past it, they may have to leave a shot. Patience and timing win these games, so don’t break the anchor early.

  • Anchor — A point made (2+ checkers) in the opponent’s home board. Defensive.
  • Advanced anchor — An anchor on the 20-point (the "golden anchor") or the 18-point.
  • Timing — In holding and back games: how long you can wait before being forced to break a key point.
  • Back game — Strategy built on two or more anchors held deep in the opponent’s home board.
  • Shot — A roll that hits an opponent’s blot.
