Blitz

Aggressive attacking strategy aiming to close the opponent out on the bar.

How it works in play

A blitz attacks with everything: hit loose checkers, make home-board points while the opponent is on the bar, and try to close them out before they can anchor. The opening 3-1, which makes your 5-point, is the classic launch pad. A blitz that stalls leaves blots everywhere and hands the game back.

  • Closeout — All six home-board points made while the opponent sits on the bar — they cannot enter until a point opens.
  • Hit — Land on an opponent’s blot, sending it to the bar.
  • Golden point — The 5-point (offense) — or the 20-point as the defensive "golden anchor."
  • Prime — Consecutive made points (a 4-prime, 5-prime, or the impassable 6-prime).
  • Gammon — Winning before the opponent bears off any checker. Worth 2× the cube value.
