Crawford rule

Universal in match play: when a player first reaches one point from victory, the next game is played without the doubling cube.

How it works in play

In a match, the first time either player gets within one point of victory, the next game, the Crawford game, is played without the cube. Without the rule the trailer could double every game at no risk. In the games after it the cube returns, and the trailer usually doubles at the first chance.

  • Post-Crawford — The games after the Crawford game in a match, with the cube back in play.
  • Match — A multi-game contest played to N points (e.g. 7, 11, 13, 21).
  • DMP — "Double match point": both players one point from winning the match.
  • Match equity — The probability of winning the match from a given score.
  • Cube — Short for "doubling cube."
