Crossover

Moving a checker into a new quadrant of the board.

How it works in play

The board has four quarters of six points, and a crossover is a move that carries a checker from one quarter into the next. Counting crossovers is a quick way to plan a bear-in: bring checkers across into your home board before you shuffle them around inside it.

  • Pip count — The total pips all your checkers still need to travel to bear off. Both sides start at 167.
  • Come-around — A checker’s journey from the opponent’s side of the board all the way around to your home board.
  • Race — A position with no remaining contact between the two sides.
  • Home board — A player’s inner table — points 1–6 from their perspective.
