Backgammon glossary · D

Double

An offer to double the stakes via the doubling cube, made before rolling.

How it works in play

Before rolling, a player may turn the cube to offer to play on for twice the stake. The opponent either takes, playing on and owning the cube, or drops, conceding the game at the current value. Only the cube’s owner may offer the next double.

  • Take — Accept a double, continuing the game at doubled stakes with cube ownership.
  • Drop — Decline a double (also "pass"), conceding the current cube value.
  • Redouble — A subsequent double by the current cube owner.
  • Doubling window — The range of winning chances where doubling is correct and the opponent should still take.
  • Doubling cube — The six-sided cube marked 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 used to raise the stakes.
